Tips on choosing the right hospital

A hospital is one of those things where you really want to make sure that you choose a good one. Admittedly in a lot of cases your hospital visit will be an emergency and you will have little choice but to go to the one that is closest. However if you are going in for a planned surgery you are going to want to do some research to make sure that the hospital that you choose is the best one to meet your needs.

The first thing that you are going to have to look at when you are choosing a hospital is that your insurance will cover that hospital. Not all hospitals are covered by all insurance policies so you are going to have to call the insurance company to find out which hospitals are covered and which are not. Once you know this you will be able to start doing some research on the options that you do have available.

The other big thing that you have to make sure of when you are choosing a hospital is that your doctor will be able to see you there. Obviously this is only relevant if you have a doctor who will be seeing you at the hospital. In most cases your regular doctor will refer you to specialist anyway and in large part this will determine which hospital you will need to go to. However if you have a doctor who you want to treat you will have to make sure that you pick a hospital at which that doctor has privileges to practice. Between this and your insurance requirements you will probably find that you have a fairly short list of places that you can choose.

The next thing that you are going to want to look at is the hospitals track record. Most states these days issue report cards on their hospitals that will rate hospitals on things like the numbers of errors that are made and the number of people who develop an infection. You can also find websites that will allow you to check on how satisfied patients were with the care that they received at the hospital. It may also be a good idea to talk to your family doctor since he will likely know which are the better hospitals.

One other thing that you are going to want to check on is that the hospital that you choose is accredited. This ensures that hospital meets certain standards that are checked by the accrediting agency. That being said this can be a little bit misleading since you are going to have to determine just what they are accredited for and if it is relevant to you. For example a hospital may be accredited as a level one trauma center but that is hardly relevant if you are going in for a hip replacement surgery.
