How to Know You Have Found a Trustworthy Doctor?

There are few relationships that you will ever have that require as much trust as the one between you and your doctor. It is critical that you know that your doctor has your best interests at heart. A lot of people are dissatisfied with their doctor so it is important that you know what you should be looking for when you are choosing a doctor to make sure that you get one that you can trust.

The most important thing that you need to look for when you are choosing a doctor is to make sure that they are a good communicator. One of the biggest complaints that people have about their doctor is that they are not able to understand what the doctor is telling them and that the doctor does not seem to take their concerns as seriously as they should. Your doctor should be able to clearly explain to you what is wrong and what needs to be done. He should also be able to address any concerns that you have. If you are not comfortable talking to your doctor you should probably look for a new one.

When you are considering a doctor it is a good idea to make sure that you check on their background. The big thing that you are going to want to check on is whether there have been any malpractice suits filed against your doctor. You do have to be realistic when you are doing this however; there are some specialties where you would be hard pressed to find a doctor who hasn't been sued for malpractice. Even then you should compare how many suits there have been compared to other doctors.

When you are researching your doctor's background you are also going to want to make sure that you check on their credentials. Don't focus too much on where they went to medical school; you can safely assume that all medical schools produce good and bad doctors. Instead what you want to focus on is what kind of specialty training they have. Your doctor should be board certified in his specialty and he should have extensive experience in that type of medicine. You are also going to want to make sure that they are keeping up with their continuing medical education.

One other thing that you are going to want to look at when you are choosing a doctor is to make sure that they have an affiliation with the hospital that you want to use. It may be that you really like a particular doctor and are willing to go to whatever hospital he works at. However if you want to be treated at a specific hospital your doctor will need to have privileges at that hospital. This should probably not be too high on your list of things to consider but is a factor.
