Health insurance: do you need it?

Health insurance is a big issue these days, in large part because there are so many people who don't have coverage. The main reason that there are so many people without coverage is the cost; a lot of people seem to think that they can get away without it. The question is do you really need health insurance or not?

It is absolutely a requirement that you have health insurance; otherwise you are going to find yourself paying for your medical care out of your own pocket. Modern medicine can do a lot of amazing things but none of it is cheap. The only way that most people are able to pay for the care that they need is to have insurance to help cover the cost. Without insurance an accident or a serious illness can end up costing you hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It is clear that having health insurance is critical, unfortunately there are a lot of people who don't have the coverage that they need. The main reason for this is the high cost of getting insurance. Most people still get their coverage from their employer however this is becoming less and less common. That means that it is necessary for most people to pay for it themselves. Unfortunately given the cost of insurance this creates a problem for a lot of people. The result is that there are many people who are trying to get by without health insurance. This is a bad idea since you are taking a huge risk. If you can't afford health insurance you do have options available to you.

The first thing that you should do if you are not able to afford health insurance is to look into the various government programs that are available. Most low income earners who are not able to get coverage through their employer will be able to get it through the government. In most cases this will be at a fairly low price that you should be able to afford. If you are a very low income earner you may be able to get the full cost subsidized by the government.

If you are not able to health insurance from the government you are going to have to get it from a private insurer. There is no getting around the fact that this is going to cost quite a bit but there are things that you can do to reduce the cost. The cheapest option that you will have is to get the most basic coverage that is available. You will be limited in what you will be covered for but you will at least have insurance in the event that the worst happens. You can also lower your premium further by choosing the highest copayment that is available.
